Synopsis
Brian Friel has been described as Chekhov of Ireland and is considered equal to the contemporaries of Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams. He is known in Greece for his award-winning work "Dancing in Lunasa". He has been awarded the Tony Prize, Laurence Olivier Prize, the New York Theater Critics Award, and more.
In AFTERPLAY, he accidentally meets two of Chekhov's heroes in a cafe in Moscow: Sonia (Theodora Siarkou) by Uncle Vania and Andrei (Paschalis Tsarouchas) by the Three Sisters. It has been many years since, apart from everyone, they came to life as heroes of the two famous plays of the leading Russian author. Now, they still exist, but they live in obscurity.
In their first chance meeting in a restaurant in Moscow, he tells her that he is now in the capital to play the violin with the State Orchestra at a well-known Opera and that, the rest of the time, he lives happily with his wife and their two beautiful children in provincial town where he lived with his Three Sisters. She tells him that she still lives in the house of her uncle Vanya, who died sweetly and calmly, and that she is now in Moscow for a profitable investment that will give new life to his estate.
However, the magic pen of Brian Friel masterfully scratches this surface of the narratives of the first meeting of Sonia and Andrei, revealing before us, with their second meeting, their current, real and beyond fantasy life. So, until the curtain falls on the end, we will have clearly seen all the secrets and lies and all the denials that each of them diligently wants to hide.
